"A fascinating and terrifying peek into the devastating outcomes of antibiotic misuse -- and what happens when standard health care falls short."―Scientific American"[A] gripping and intriguing medical thriller...This page-turner of a couple's determination to survive also serves as a dire warning regarding the consequences of the overuse of antibiotics."―Publishers Weekly (starred review)"A thriller, a detective story, and at its core a profound romance, The Perfect Predator is [a] breathtaking story.... It's a warning of the havoc that awaits us as antibiotics lose their power, and a glimpse of the science that could hold that dark future at bay - if we can summon the funding and the political will to create it."―Maryn McKenna, Senior Fellow of the Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism at Brandeis University and author of Big Chicken and Superbug"At once terrifying and inspiring, The Perfect Predator is a brilliant race-against-the-clock medical thriller that is also a celebration of love, commitment, and the power of scientific collaboration."―Steven Johnson, New York Times bestselling author of Where Good Ideas Come From and The Ghost Map"A remarkable story of love, resilience, the science of discovery, and quite possibly the future of medicine."―Richard Horton, FRCP, FMedSci, Editor-in-Chief, The Lancet"One of the single most compelling personal stories we've ever heard."―Arielle Eckstut and David Henry Sterry, authors of The Essential Guide to Getting your Book Published"A real-life medical thriller...fast paced [and] the writing is always infused with humor, hope, and intelligence, and the couple's remarkable story is grounded in real-life details that bring readers directly into their world. Dark, surreal poetic."―Kirkus Reviews"The Perfect Predator is a compelling and heart-wrenching medical drama that would be completely unbelievable - if it weren't 100% true! Strathdee and Patterson masterfully weave together the personal, medical, and scientific strands of their battle against one of the world's worst superbugs, bringing not just Patterson, but a century-old medical technology back from the brink of death. This first-hand account of the front lines of the battle against the scourge of antimicrobial resistance underscores the human cost underlying the bland statistics."―Rob Knight, PhD, Director, Center for Microbiome Innovation, University of California San Diego and author of Follow Your Gut and Dirt Is Good"[A] riveting tale...The saga reads like a thriller....Remarkable passages from Patterson [describe] how he interpreted events through veils of feverish delirium, pain-killer fog, and coma."―Laurie Garret, The Lancet

From the Author

This story reads like science fiction, but it's not. If you didn't know that multi-drug resistant bacteria will kill someone every 3 seconds by 2050, you're not alone. Tom and I were blind-sided when he went from being a supremely hardy guy to one who was fighting for his life against the deadliest superbug on the planet. For me, as an infectious disease epidemiologist, my professional and personal lives collided, and I took it personally. This book isn't just our story; it's a cautionary tale about the world we now live in, a world on the verge of a post-antibiotic era where a small scrape or a routine surgery could end up being fatal. Find out how we enlisted the help of strangers around the globe to resurrect a hundred year old forgotten cure that now holds promise as a potential solution to combat the global superbug crisis. Â

Having known the authors long before they met each other, and having experienced this incredible saga through Steffanie’s 9 month’s of Facebook postings, I wasn’t expecting the thrill of reading this account. But from the moment I started to read it, I became so engrossed that I couldn’t put it down until I had finished it! Somehow they have managed to weave the caregiver and patient experiences into a gripping account of a catastrophic drug resistant infection that all but killed Tom Patterson until Steffanie Strathdee found an abandoned bacteriophage therapy and managed to enlist the worldwide medical research and government regulatory networks in coming up with a cure within hours of her husband’s certain death. And, in so doing, revived interest in what might be a potent tool in the battle against multi-drug resistant bacterial infections that threaten returning us to the pre-antibiotic era. Written in a way that both medical and lay readers can understand and experience the ups and downs and final miraculous outcome.

I adore this book! What a gripping book that describes the true story of great love, great science, and great persistence. I was so moved and thrilled reading it I read it all in 2 days straight. It is a combination of a unique love story of a wife for her dying husband, a tense medical mystery as the best doctors try to understand what is killing Tom, and a masterful story of a female scientist using all her wisdom and bravery to save her husband's life. This book is a hell of an entertaining read, an education in science and medicine (get your vaccinations people!), and an important feminist book as well.

This book has an incredible jorney of a couple of scientist coping with a killing health disease. Underline the book has a strong message of the power of love and the way a couple figth not only for living, but for a unknowingly therapy that will save thousands of lives in a world where more often we are incapable of fight against stronger viruses and bacteria. Thanks for sharing!

Antibiotic resistance is a very real thing. Steffanie Strathdee and Thomas Patterson give readers a first hand personal account of what happens when infection meets antibiotic resistance. The Perfect Predator follows the true story of turning to viruses to attack a bacterial infection as a last resort when nothing else works.

The Perfect Predator is a good tale that is well told. Who would have thought that a true story with a virus as a protagonist and a bacteria as the antagonist could be so compelling? I could not put the book down!Steve Kapchinske

This book commands your attention and keeps you engaged as you feel you are right there with the medical professionals battling a deadly superbug to try to save the life of one of their comrades. “The Perfect Predator: A Scientist’s Race To Save Her Husband From A Deadly Superbug: A Memoir” is a true story. The co-authors are married and a third writer named Teresa Barker collaborates on the book. The husband, Tom Patterson, a psychologist, contracts a bacterium that is ultra-resistant to antibiotics while on a cruise and land tour. He falls terribly ill following a climb and crawl into the caves of a pyramid. Initial thinking is that the superbug was in the dust or otherwise in the pyramid. The illness lays him out flat on his back. The impact to his organs and vital signs gets really bad really fast. His wife, Steffanie Strathdee is an epidemiologist and has experience researching bacteria and viruses but has never seen anything like this superbug. If you have read accounts of MRSA and C Difficile that have resulted in patient deaths in hospitals and of superbugs that resulted in amputations, you are about to meet a new superbug for which no known FDA approved or experimental antibiotic will even make a dent. Tom would have died in a local clinic in Egypt if his wife was not a professional in her field with access to high power help from top talent in the medical field. The book is fast-paced and takes you for a rocky ride. First challenge to overcome is to get Tom from a rural Egyptian hospital to capable medical care for his condition. Thanks to travel insurance (an option you will likely be sure to sign up for after reading this book), Tom gets air evacuated by a super-qualified German medical team. The details of how the team collects Tom and packs him off to Germany on their jet form an exciting episode that I re-read several times. Nearing a crisis that is shutting down his bodily functions, Tom has to endure more air travel while being classified as a carrier for a powerful, possibly incurable bacterium. How do you kill such a superbug? The book contains a treasure trove of medical professionals by name and area of practice and also identifies organizations that are enlisted to work on the solution for Tom’s deadly and time-sensitive infection. The solution involves the use of specific bacteria-attacking viruses known as phages. I did not know what a phage was until I read this book.Tom has flashbacks and hallucinations described in interludes in the main story while the bacteria eats away at organs, blood stream, kidneys, digestive tract and renders him helpless. The book reaches climax after climax as the battle continues in laboratories, hospitals, and even, get this, sewage outflows and swamps. One by-product of this book for me is that I am far more aware of the risks entailed with breathing questionable air, eating risky foods, travel in contaminated environments, and entering a hospital. The book provides websites and organization names to help get you a head start if you ever fall prey to one of these tough, resistant bacteria.
