I have always loved a good contemporary YA, and while I’ve never shied away from the ones that are more serious, lately I’ve mostly stuck with fluff and fantasy (for reasons). But Lizzy Mason’s stunning debut The Art of Losing is like a breath of fresh air; this heartfelt book somehow finds a way to perfectly balance the serious with lightness. And isn’t that the best way to live your life? Laughter is what helps us get though the hard times, and this book provides the perfect blend of tragedy, heart and humor. This book gave me so many feels, I don’t even know where to begin.Okay, let’s start with my favorite part: the relationship between Audrey and Raf (because I’m always a sucker for a good love story, more so lately than ever before). Their relationship is far from easy, but I loved the honesty and openness they share. Their past childhood friendship provides a nostalgic foundation, but it’s the realness of the time they spend together — and their ability to be truthful with each other — that makes their connection so special. There is a raw honesty to some of the moments they share that resonate with me still, long after finishing the book. The main arc of the book follows Harley in the aftermath of her sister’s actions and the crash that leaves her in a coma. The conflicting emotions she feels throughout this ordeal are complex, but Mason deftly helps her heroine navigate them in a way that feels genuine and real. (And they should; Lizzy was inspired by some of her own experiences as a teen addict.) Raf often helps provide perspective and guidance as Harley navigates these feelings, but ultimately, it’s up to her how to handle things — and though she makes mistakes along the way, she finds a way to live with what has happened and move forward. The Art of Losing is a book about grace and love and forgiveness — both for others, and for ourselves. I was absolutely captivated by this book from start to finish, and I can’t wait to see what Lizzy writes next.
2.5 STARS 4 STARS FIRST HALF 1 STAR SECOND HALF*Minor nonspecific spoilers*After Harley catches her sister and boyfriend kissing, Audrey and Mike are in an accident that leaves her in a coma. Harley reconnects with her neighbor and first love Raf as Audrey begins her recovery. Themes of addiction and recovery permeate through the story.During the first half of THE ART OF LOSING, I connected with Harley and the story, certain I was reading a five star book. Lizzy Mason prefaces THE ART OF LOSING with her own tale of addiction, recovery, rehab and twelve step programs. She second half of the book was a heavy-handed ode to substance abuse recovery. Mason clearly had a Very Important Message she wanted to convey substituting plot and character for her message. Here are some of the reasons I didn’t rate THE ART OF LOSING higher:-Instead of insta-love, Harley had insta-therapy. During her first session she opened up with no trepidation showing the insight of someone who has been in therapy for years.-Harley’s monologues to Mike and his mother.-Audrey’s traumatic brain injury recovery was plot driven and unrealistic to the levels at which thinking and memory return.-Love supersedes 12 step program.THE ART OF LOSING is a well-written, well-intentioned book that I wouldn’t recommend to anyone struggling with substances or anyone who wants to date a newly sober addict. Raf and Harley acknowledge the recommendation to avoid relationships in the first year of sobriety, but say screw it, our new love is way more important, even after he relapses. Raf says he’ll risk the pain of a possible breakup, but the reason for not dating is more to focus on sobriety as a priority. Harley decides she’s up to dating him after two AA meetings and a therapy session. Not a good message.
When I was a young adult, there were no books like this. This is an entertaining book about a deadly serious subject—addiction and recovery. It depicts the real confusion of a seventeen year old girl, who has to face her poor choices and try to make better ones in the future. The Art of Losing deals with peer group pressure and the importance of appearance. It is the kind of book that will engage young people, while allowing them to question their own lives.
This book is wonderful and a must-read for all teens. The writing is beautiful, and the author deals with hard subjects like teen addiction, betrayal, rehab and more with a deft, unflinching hand. At no point does this book slip into being preachy, and I wish I'd had a book like this as a teen. It would've helped me navigate so many tough social situations; better understand what I and some of my friends were going through; and it would've let me know it was ok to go my own way against peer pressure. Beyond all that though, this is a searing sisters story and a swoony sweet romance that will stay with readers long after they're done reading.
This is a great book for teens and for those who wish to understand them better. It explores some of the pain and decision making that takes place during this difficult period in all our lives.
