Review

Understanding the Gift by John Vames - best book on the planet for learning to play Native American Flute. I have tried and carried numerous other method books and have decided to carry this Book exclusively. There is none better in my opinion. If you are looking for lessons that you can see, hear and understand, this is the resource for you. You learn everything from proper finger placement, breathing, embellishments, and vibrato (the techniques to create those wonderful sounds you hear the best artists use). John explains and plays these techniques on the accompanying CD perfectly. You will also learn improvisation and you have the opportunity to learn and understand how to read Tablature for NAF. John makes everything perfectly clear in the book and on the accompanying CD. Tap into the knowledge and 40 + years of experience of a master musician and instructor. You will not find a better Book to learn the Native American Flute with. **Once you have taken advantage of John's teaching acumen and have become proficient with the NAF, I highly recommend Song For Koko:JAZZ also by John. This resource will further reveal to you the art of improvisation (which is the essence of the NAF) using Jazz as the vehicle to further your performance skills. Do yourself a favor and pick up these Books today. You will be pleased with the results, and so will your audience. ; Richard Maynard, Flutemaker LAUGHING CROW FLUTES --Richard Maynard, Flutemaker Laughing Crow FLutes --Richard Maynard Laughing Crow FlutesThis is the missing piece of work that the NAF community needed...this is the first system/book/cd --sound out, quite literally, potential mates, is now used Bob Bellus Sweet River Sounds

About the Author

John Vames has been playing and teaching music professionally for over 40 years The focus of his teaching is not only to develop professional musicians but also to show students how to create and enjoy music the enrichment of their own lives. With his help hundreds of people of all ages have learned to play clarinet, sax, transverse flute, Native American Flute, Jazz and Classical piano. His friendship with the Native American Flute began in 1995 when he heard the sound. As an educator he realized how easy it was for almost anyone to play. Unlike piano or guitar that take years of study, this instrument could be mastered in a short time. What followed was his initiation of Flute classes at Scottsdale Community College in Scottsdale, Arizona and the first 16 week credited program for Native American Flute on a Community College level In February 2005, his 2nd book Song for Koko:Jazz for Native American Flute was presented for the advanced player. NOW here is Volume II of the Native American FLute SONGBOOK based on all you learned in Volume I

I give this a 3-star. I was disappointed in this book. The author chose to create his own tablature for notating the fingering positions on the flute. Anybody learning to play from this book will not easily be able to make the transition to playing music for flute that is notated using a different system, either the standard Nakai tablature, or Western music notation. For beginners who do not read Western music notation this book may be fine - but be warned that the standard tablature used to indicate music for the Native American flute is completely different from the notation introduced in this book.

I just can't believe how excellent a teacher Mr. Vames was. He explained from the heart and I think everyone can understand that. I'm very new to playing, only the last maybe 6mos. and there is so much more that I DON"T know that he explains in this book. I like the way that the songs start out in the easy finger tablature for the first half of the book and progress all the way to the end of the book so you can end up learning how to read music with the staffs. He even tells you when to breathe, I mean it can't get any easier to learn than that! He has the CD so you can listen to how it's suppose to sound also. I think I will be mostly referring to the book and listening to the CD off & on. I'm excited to be able to learn all the slurs and , chirping and a lot more than was explained in the beginner's book I got with my flute. I love the man who wrote the music book that came with my flute but was very happily surprised with this one. I thought the volume II was a bit expensive but after seeing how good and in depth Mr. Vames goes in to teaching how to play, I'll happily be getting that one too! This is exciting and I can't wait to learn even more than I thought I would be able to now. Thank-you Mr. Vames!

This this the best teaching guide for the Native American Flute (NAF). No prior musical training is required. John Vames starts the novice with basic instructions on breath control, holding the flute and covering the holes. The new player will soon be playing his/her first song. Vames moves on to various embellishments as well as teaching the student to recognize musical notation. Finally, Vames includes a number of Native American and traditional songs including Amazing Grace and Ode to Joy.Vames recorded the accompanying CD with a flute tuned to "A". I recommend that the novice try learn using an "A" flute as well to avoid confusion while playing along."Understanding The Gift" is recognized by many NAF players as the ultimate training guide.

This is a GREAT book to get you into playing the Native American Flute and learning to read Tablature (for those who can't or don't want to learn note "music"). It's also a great book for taking the intermediate student forward into being able to read the tablatures written by other NAF players and even writing their own down the line. The ONLY two reasons it did NOT receive 5-stars is 1) the over pricing (it should be in the $12.99-$18.95 range) and 2) the binding. The drawback to being a perfect-bound book instead of a Spiro...and it's a MAJOR one...is that the book won't stay open unless you destroy the spine. This is totally unacceptable for a book that needs to be laid open and "hands-off" to be effective. It's frustrating as hell and costs a small fortune to have the spine cut off and then a Spiro binding put it. If you can be sure you are getting one of the new editions with a spiral spine then good on you. I was unable to guarantee that through Amazon purchasing, so I failed and literally paid the price...TWICE! Regardless, if you are new to the Native American Flute you really DO need this book to help you progress beyond merely running up and down the Pentatonic scale. Nice for meditative music an improvisation, but you'll soon get stuck playing the same riffs over and over if you don't have an effective guide and learning tool to push you along a bit.

As a wooden flute maker, I am always interested in publications that will help myself and others learn how to play the Native American Flute [NAF]. This book was recommended to me by Scott August a professional NAF player and recording artist. Scott said this was the best book on the market to help someone learn how to play and understand the musicality of the NAF so I followed his suggestion and purchaced this volume. Mr. Vames is a music teacher with many years of teaching experience. He uses the skills and techniques of an educator to transfer his knowledge and experience to the student. This book is excellent in its design: diagrams, readability, progression and recorded songs on an interactive CD that comes with the book. I have other books with CD's that are wonderful but this book is a music text on how to play the NAF and demonstrations on the CD make it a real winner. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in being taught how to play the NAF, not just songs on a CD that provide auditory feedback. Superb!

I purchased this book to assist my wife, who is practicing on a newly purchased Native American Flute. It has helped her (and me....). Now I listen to her playing and really happy she is enjoying it.

Vames has done an exceptional job in creating this beautiful piece of work that really helps individuals who have never touched a flute to be able to find their way into the beauty and sound of the Native American Wood flute. This book is ideal for the beginner as it sets out the basics needed to be able to play and apperciate the beauty and simplicity of one of our own creations as Native North American Indian people.I would recommend this book as a starter and then have the student graduate, if need be to R. Carlos Nakai's book on the Native American Flute. One does not need to know a thing about music or musical theory to be able to pick up the flute and learn to play it and read music written in Nakai tablature. This book is "The Gift".
