Review
“Nick Drnaso's Beverly captures such a recognizable, raw feeling of the "now" that if it was a film Drnaso would be heralded as a "stunning new directorial voice." If it was a novel, he would be a "literary sensation." But Beverly's chilled windowpane views into the fogged American psyche are not cartoon copies of film or literature. They're something completely new. A debut book by a young writer-artist who has not only absorbed but also advanced beyond the comics which have preceded him, Beverly is the finest and most electrically complex graphic novel I've read in years, announcing an intelligent, shrewd and disquieting talent not only to comics, but also to writing and visual art. It will set its barbs in you and not let go.†―Chris Ware, author of Building Stories“Nick's precise drawings and unsettling stories present a world felt and filtered through a very particular (and palpable) consciousness, but not an ego, our world seen through alien, but not unsympathetic, eyes. It's impossible to predict what will happen from page to page, as narratives connect subtly and themes emerge slowly, but each re-reading bears new and satisfying surprises.†―Ivan Brunetti, author of Aesthetics, a Memoir"... uncomfortable, fascinating ... I read it in big enthusiastic gulps..."―Dan Kois, Slate"...a suite of interlinked stories about blinkered, confused suburban youths, stranded somewhere in 1990s middle America."―Sean Rogers, The Globe and Mail"Drnaso's stories and characters, and perhaps his view of the world are ... achingly realistic, and all too familiar."―Janet Potter, The Chicago Reader"The combination of the repression and uncertainty the characters feel is echoed in the numerous panels that are wholly devoid of people, showing just places but no life. Beverly is an accomplished graphic novel, and is highly recommended." - The Quietus

Exceptionally enjoyable graphic novel, best I've read in years actually. The stories are highly creative and although somewhat focused on teen and young adult characters, get into some interesting issues like urban crime, class and xenophobia. The artwork is simple but effective. Highest recommendation.
Absolutely fantastic debut from Nick Drnaso. Everything about Beverly - from the simplistic illustration, the wonderfully nihilistic intertwined plots, to even the page feel and weight of the paper - is delightful. I finished it in one sitting, but the carefully connected storylines definitely leaves the opportunity for another read.
Some of the short stories were decent but as a whole I don't think the comic holds up. It felt like a lot of indie comic books where the author is trying to say profound but really there isn't anything that deep. After I read the book I looked up interpretations online to see if there was anything I missed but I didn't find anything. Also the art style is very minimalist. It has a Chris Ware vibe to it. It works for the whole morbid/slice of life/ existential feel but it also made it difficult to tell characters apart at times.
Wow. i mean...wow. This is a breathtaking, emotional rollercoaster ride through and around the lives of a suburban family, depicting the humor and the heartbreak of a mundane life. There are plot twists that are as shocking and as unexpected as anything you'd find in the best of M. Night Shyamalan's earliest work, and a very ominous shadow of darkness in an otherwise blasé American landscape that Stephen King hasn't been able to recreate in three decades. Yes, I'm aware that those aren't graphic artists like Dmaso, but that's the point: he has the eyes of a cinematographer and the instincts of a literary master.About his style, I should say this: I didn't cotton to it for the first story, but after that, wow. It's very clean, clinical, and crisp; if it is to be a biting commentary on suburban life, as some have suggested, then the antiseptic nature of this style only makes it more potent and powerful. I know that I started on this not really knowing what lay ahead, and an hour or so later, I was putting it back down, astounded by the world I had just encountered. This is as perfect a debut as one could expect, and I'm looking forward to saying that his next work overshadows and outshines the greatness that is found in Beverly's colorful pages.....
Not really my cup of tea, but well done.
If you love movies by todd solondz you'll love this graphic novel. So bleak so real so good.
Nick Drnaso has a remarkable sense of space and perspective. Each line in every panel is drawn with surgical precision. The story wove an interesting pattern. Poignant at times; disturbing at others. Getting ready to read it for a third time.
Just a really outstanding read on American culture right now - this book does an uncanny job of showing the subtext, undercurrents and dreariness of modern Americana.
