Freak Kingdom: Hunter S. Thompson's Manic Ten-Year Crusade Against American Fascism, by Timothy Denevi

Review

"Timothy Denevi's Freak Kingdom is a high-octane and elegantly written study of Hunter S. Thompson's fatwah against fascism. The damn thing is alive with anarchistic and climactically redemptive Gonzo mischief. A fierce resistance fable for our troubled times!"―Douglas Brinkley, Katherine Tsanoff Brown Chair in Humanities and Professor of History at Rice University, and author of Cronkite"Hunter Thompson is back and very much alive in this sympathetic and sharply written 'best years of his life' bio. I loved it."―Terry Gilliam, director of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas"Based not on the Upper West Side or in West Hollywood but in Woody Creek, Colorado, Hunter S. Thompson got onto the page more of the 1960s and 1970s than any of his contemporaries. In this painstaking, exquisitely detailed, and impressively balanced book, Timothy Denevi conveys at what extraordinary cost to Thompson such herculean work was accomplished. If a writer doesn't aim to cause trouble, why even bother?"―David Shields"Surreal, astonishing, and at times deeply disturbing, Freak Kingdom is a welcome and timely revision to the popular hagiography of the larger-than-life Hunter S. Thompson depicted by popular culture. A necessary read for anyone who wishes to understand our current political moment."―Jennifer Percy, winner of the National Magazine Award and author of Demon Camp"Timothy Denevi shines a long-overdue light the powerful idealism that underlies all of Hunter S. Thompson's best writing, and he proves us that Hunter's writing is just as relevant and important today as it was in the early 70s. This book is a must-read for anyone concerned about our current political situation, and shows why Hunter's books continue to inspire new generations of readers."―Juan F. Thompson, author of Stories I Tell Myself: Growing up with Hunter S. Thompson"Freak Kingdom...sheds new light on Thompson's politically awakening and reporting -- and the toll it took on him and his later work and life. Few books this season will give you a stronger and more chilling sense of déjà vu...The book chronicles, in absorbing day-by-day detail, how Thompson intersected with history more than some may recall."―Rolling Stone"Denevi...crafts his biography like a nonfiction novel, letting his research unfold in a captivating narrative that places readers at some of the most important episodes of Thompson's career. Denevi's work reminds us that the persistent concern about totalitarianism overwhelming free speech isn't something new. And 50 years ago, one journalist decided to do something about it."―The Associated Press"Through meticulous research and recreated in novelistic detail, Denevi chronicles Thompson's scramble to create a viable career out of the instability of freelance writing...If you've ever felt Thompson a bit much to read on his own, Freak Kingdom makes a handy and stabilizing companion text: the behind-the-scenes details of how his big stories came together make it impossible to dismiss Thompson as the pop culture caricature he was later made out to be."―Salon"Terrifically redemptive....the first book about Thompson to be written during the Trump presidency...Denevi gives a charmingly sensational account of Thompson's life in order to prove his point that Thompson actually conducted himself as quite a serious person."―PopMatters"Denevi's writing does more than just bring the period alive, it makes one want to be there as if it were brand new...there has never been a Hunter S. Thompson biographer who has captured Thompson's work as well...Simply put, Freak Kingdom does justice to Hunter S. Thompson."―CounterPunch

Like many of my boomer generation, I've enjoyed HST's writing since I first read his two-issue of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" when first published under the identity of Raul Duke in Rolling Stone. I LOL'd every few pages and have read several of his works in various publications as well as biographies over the years.I also patiently read and discussed his writing with people who seemed to feel threatened by his Gonzo style of journalism or his style of writing. To those critics, I'll say, "f'-em." HST was fun to read, and what is wrong with that?I followed his career and appreciated his political skewering politics from an incredibly cynical point of view. He was the leftist who shook his fist and bellowed against an establishment completely dedicated to power. I found it both hilarious and honest from his point of view. All establishment political figures took a turn in HST's barrel. This book attempts to portray him as a serious political critic. I learned things about him I have never found anywhere else. It is limited in coverage to those issues, but worth reading for those interested in HST or that period of political history.I miss him but we have his written works which will endure.

I'm a long-time fan of HST so I of course loved this as it's well-written and offers new POVs on some legendary moments, as well as ones I didn't know. Beyond that though, the historical/political aspect made for a great read even if you have never heard of HST. In fact, I was with my parents at the time of reading this, and they both borrowed it and immediately read it cover to cover. They had never heard of Fear and Loathing but they remember the moments he experienced and wrote about so they were still able to connect. That ability to hook reader's regardless of their Thompson knowledge is a tribute to the author.

Bought for son who is a reader

The author does a great job of encapsulating the most productive era of Hunter Thompson and his mission to expose the Nixon administration.

“Freak Kingdom” focuses on Hunter Thompson’s political journalism in the years between the Kennedy assassination and Nixon resignation. It’s an astute way to frame his peak period. Although Thompson continued to harbor hopes for his fiction, the Kennedy assassination pushed him toward journalism, and the rise and fall of Richard Nixon inspired some of his most trenchant work.Readers will be disappointed if they expect a searching evaluation of Thompson’s political journalism. Instead, the chief concern is his political education, which Timothy Denevi recreates by featuring episodes from Thompson’s personal and professional life. Shrewdly combining details from various sources, Denevi offers a series of fully realized scenes whose vitality exceeds any single collection of facts. How reliable are these scenes? That question goes to one of Thompson’s central concerns: the best way to render the world truthfully. He never accepted the distinction between veracious journalism and fanciful fiction. To the contrary, he always thought fiction was a superior vehicle for expressing truths that mattered. “Freak Kingdom” not only endorses Thompson’s method but also adopts it. By dramatizing the key decade in Thompson’s life, “Freak Kingdom” brings his weird journey into clear and vivid focus.

I'm a Hunter Thompson fan, so I had to pick up this book. It shows an activist side which many people are unaware of. The in-depth analysis of politics in the 70's is particularly relevant in today's political environment. The coverage of and details about Nixon should be required reading for those who didn't live through it. I particularly enjoyed seeing do much detail about the younger version of Hunter Thompson, his wife, his life, and his friends. It was a surprisingly easy read written in a style I found most refreshing. I picked up and literally couldn't put it down until I finished. Best read this year.

Mini book review: Just finished Timothy Denevi’s “Freak Kingdom,” subtitled “Hunter S. Thompson’s Ten-Year Crusade Against American Fascism.” I’ve been reading and re-reading a lot of books that the rise of Trumpist neo-Nazism has brought to mind – the classic “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany,” by William Shirer was the first book I revisited – and this new book came to my attention because the two journalists I most wish could be around to comment on Trump and his minions are Hunter Thompson and Molly Ivans, both dead. “Freak Kingdom” is not a cradle to grave biography of Thompson but focuses on his most productive period, which includes his writings about the POTUS that was easily the most evil in history until Trump came along: Richard Milhous Nixon. “[w]e will not see another like him for quite a while. He was dishonest to a fault, the truth was not in him, and if it can be said that he resembled any other animal in this world, it could only have been the hyena.” What would he have said about Trump. I have a particular affection for Thompson because I met him when I was working for his friend United States Senator Gary Hart (D. Colo.) (there are many stories there) and because in my first career as a journalist I tried and failed to be as Gonzo as Thompson. You should read this book just to consider the Nixon-Trump nexus. For a pop cultural tome it is meticulously researched with more than 100 pages of fine print end notes. It would be a great addition to your library if you are doing scholarly research on the era or if you just want to revisit a time that now seems long gone.
