I bought this book in a panic during the last year before retirement. In retrospect, I should have saved my money. The book might be interesting for someone who wants a superficial overview of a lot of topics if they don't have access to the internet, but most things in this book were discussed more thoroughly in articles I had already found online. I praise the author's basic premise, though, that every retiree needs to become financially literate. For me, this book wasn't very valuable but it might be a useful starting point for others who are starting to prepare for retirement. Why not look for it in the library first, to judge for yourself whether it's worth your money?

Great book - Of course my Dad wrote it...Seriously, my 93year old father has dedicated the past 20 years of his life helping others get honest, unbiased financial education in a world where billions are spent marketing financial services to you, with your money and at a very high cost to your retirement. All proceeds of the book are donated to charity - Not my inheritance:)

I'm a big fan of Vanguard and hold nearly all of my investments there so I was thrilled to find this book. However, sadly, it's outdated in key areas. It was published in 2009 (not 2011) and doesn't contain information on important new laws like the Affordable Care Act, the American Taxpayer Relief Act, etc. which affect retirement planning. In addition, if you're familiar with the general Vanguard/Boglehead investment principles (diversify, stay the course, etc) there won't be much new information in here for you. For those not familiar with Vanguard and the basics of retirement planning, it would be a useful guide if it were updated.

In the months before my retirement I read many books on asset allocation and investing for 30 plus years. This is one of the best I read. The writers were clear but also complete in explaining the basis for the recommendations and suggestions.

I was so impressed with "The Bogleheads' Guide to Investing" that I picked up this next book in the Bogleheads series. If you loved the first book, this one won't disappoint!"The Bogleheads' Guide to Retirement Planning" stays true to the investing principles pioneered by Vanguard-founder Jack Bogle. However, unlike the first book, this book is focused on the various aspects of retirement planning. There is a lot more to retirement planning than 401(k)s and IRAs. Important topics such as how much money to take out every year to make your money outlast your retirement, how to factor in inflation, when should annuities be considered, what kinds of insurance you should have, and how to plan your estate are answered in this book.Young people shouldn't brush off this book. In fact, younger readers would be much better prepared than their peers if they are proactive in reading this book. Chapters such as the one on early retirement are targeted towards them, so this book is a wealth of knowledge for all ages. One of my favorite lines from the authors is: "Choosing the right mix of assets at the beginning of your career is not as important as getting started on retirement early and establishing good financial habits. At the beginning, it is the amount that you put into a plan that counts, rather than the return of the investment in that plan." A good way to live by this statement is to pay yourself first after every pay period and using your designated retirement accounts specifically for their intended purpose (short of a real emergency). If anything, advice like this is more useful for the younger audience than the ones closer to retirement. After you read this book, Appendix II has plenty of good reading for novice investors, intermediate investors, and advanced investors. Regardless of which category you fall under, you will be better prepared for retirement after reading this book.

After reading Mr. Larimore's outstanding book The Boglehead's Guide to the Three Fund Portfolio, I contacted him via the Bogleheads forum and asked him about drawdown strategies in retirement since they are not at all covered in that book. Mr. Larimore suggested I purchase The Bogleheads Guide to Retirement Planning for detailed coverage of that. Mistake. Big Mistake. The single chapter on the topic pretty much assumes the 4% drawdown strategy and is not helpful in the least bit. For this kind of discussion I recommend Ben Stein's book Yes, You Can Still Retire Comfortably. Page 128 has a drawdown graph that is more valuable than the entire chapter in Mr. Larimore's book. Take a pass on this one, folks.

A good book on Jack Bogle's ideas on stocks. Easy to understand and effective in my opinion. Worth reading before getting hooked up with the high cost brokers who charge much more than Vanguard or Fidelity for their funds but give less returns in the long run.

Father's Day gift for my father in law planning to retire in a few years. This provides a lot of clear information in an easy to read package. A lot of people think you have to pay for professional retirement advice. This is not true, and many paid professionals are only looking out for their own interests. This book can really help.

Bogleheads rule! As a fan of Vanguard and John Bogle, I was happy to find this resource summarizing much of the information available on the bogleheads forum, but in a more concise, edited, and easy to understand format. It still reads a bit like a bunch of disconnected chapters (as each chapter was written by a different person), but overall it's a great resource.
