Forgotten God: Reversing Our Tragic Neglect of the Holy Spirit, by Francis Chan

From Publishers Weekly

The author of the bestselling Crazy Love pleads passionately for the church to live by the power of the forgotten God: the Holy Spirit. Calling Christians to more than just a better life, Chan says he wants to live a life unexplainable without the Holy Spirit, so dependent on the Spirit that, he says, if he doesn't come through, I'm screwed. He offers vivid personal stories and illustrations about how the church ought to help Christians discern the powerful gifts of the Spirit, rather than toning down radicals. Biographies of people keeping in step with the Spirit conclude each chapter. Not a comprehensive study but intended for application, it consequently lacks depth of context in most Bible references. Ultimately, though, this serves Chan's aim to end ceaseless talk and follow God's lead to assist the poor, the abused and anyone without hope. Chan himself has given all royalties from Crazy Love to a ministry to children trapped in sex trafficking, explaining that God said to him, I want you to love them as your own children. Chan's voice is fresh, earthy and fiery. (Sept.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

This is the first book by Francis Chan that I have ever read, and I was amazed. I found this book to be eminently readable, realistic, down-to-earth, practical and sincere. I was impressed by his honesty, questions and thought-provoking content.Who is the Holy Spirit, he asks. The response surprised me, even as a long-time believer and active reader. Chan presents the Spirit as person, with emotions who can be grieved, eternal, holy, God, possessing desires and will. What happens to your life when the Spirit is present? We receive assitance, life, freedom and more. What is your motivation for wanting the Spirit in your life? What are your fears of getting the Spirit? Each chapter concludes with a written portrait of a person or persons whose lives are characterized by the leading of the Holy Spirit. They are famous and not famous men and women whose lives manifest that power of God at work in real life. While the theology is assuredly Protestant, as a Catholic I still found this book valuable and inspiring. A keeper!

I consider myself to be a "student" of the Holy Spirit. I have read a number of Bible commentaries on the Spirit, including Billy Graham's book. I have head Francis Chan speak on a number of occasions, and I have read at least one of his other books, but I was "late to this party," and I greatly regret that. I VERY MUCH enjoyed reading Forgotten God. If you would like to be encouraged -- and convicted -- by a solid biblical analysis of the Holy Spirit, seek no more!

This book is one of those books that will affect you. Deeply. If you wish your church had more passion, more love for people who attend (even once), look like the Acts 2 church; did you ever wonder why it feels like something is missing? Maybe it's because some ONE is missing. If you long to read a book that will show you how to get more peace, joy, love, self control and the other fruit of the spirit, and the Bible is just not speaking to you as you know it could be---this book might just be the catalyst you need to show you how to live the life God wants you to experience. If that scares you a bit, then you really do need to absorb what Francis Chan is teaching in this heart-filled message.

Powerful book! It will step on most folks toes, it did mine but I'm getting over it. My problem, not God's. I bought both Forgotten God: Reversing Our Tragic Neglect of the Holy Spirit and Crazy Love. I am wading through both of them. I'm wading because I'm still on the shallow end of a really deep subject. This is not the place for a testimony so I won't go there. If you let it, the book will touch your life deeply all the way to your soul -- that's what counts -- that's really all that counts! For that reason I give it a five star rating.

You And Me Forever by Francis and Lisa Chan is the best kind of bait-and-switch. It looks like a marriage book, and it sounds like a marriage book, but it’s not REALLY a book on marriage. It’s really a book about having the eternal view of every aspect of life, including marriage and parenting. It’s a book about seeking first the Kingdom of God and everything else, including a healthy marriage, flowing from that. And it’s about seeing everything you have, including your marriage, as something to be used for the mission of God in this world.I estimate only about 25% of this book directly addresses marriage and marriage issues. I’m reluctant to let that cat out of the bag, because the best-case scenario would be someone beginning this book with their guard down, expecting some “tried-and-true marriage tips,” and getting creamed unawares by the Chans’ amazing vision of living a life focused on God and His mission. This book rocked me like none I’ve read in a long time. It’s unquestionably the best book I’ve read all year, and the best marriage book I’ve ever read—if it indeed qualifies as a marriage book. This book is a manifesto of daily discipleship, in light of eternity. It was simultaneously water for my parched soul, and painful, jolting stab of conviction to my heart. This is a book for married people, single people, people with kids, and people without them. The American church desperately needs the message of this book.Francis and Lisa Chan do an excellent job of narrating the book. At first I found the narration a little dry. However, as the book goes on, both of them speak with deep conviction and seriousness, practically pleading with the listener to repent of their small view of God and His mission. It’s prophetic stuff, and I’m so glad they narrated it themselves.Highly, highly recommended. Please Note: This audiobook was gifted as a part of the Christianaudio Reviewers Program in exchange for my unbiased review of this work. This has in no way influenced my opinion or review of this work. More information can be found about this and other Christian audiobooks at christianaudio.com.
