Wonderfully written and full of information I had not read before.
My research on Guillermo del Toro’s art has taken me to a host of scholarly volumes as well as handsome, oversized making-of-the-film tributes. In this study, though, I find the volume that most successfully combines those two drives.Messrs. Seitz and Abrams investigate technique, script & camera challenges and joys, the tragedies of Spanish history, filmic influences, psychology behind casting, and just how some of the most iconic images in 21st Century war & ghost cinema came about. The book features an abundance of storyboards and behind-the-scenes makeup SFX, as well as revealing essays from principal cast & crew. Probably my favorite parts are the inserted biographies del Toro wrote for key characters (unavailable elsewhere, as far as I know) and the lengthy interviews with del Toro that go far and deep under Seitz’s thoughtful questioning. For instance, rather than mere generalisms, you will learn the challenge of dealing with colors (reds and browns are terrors) and how “dinkies†helped light those painterly compositions in _The Devil’s Backbone_, among other filmmaking nitty gritty. But beware: if you buy this as a gift for your friends-in-del Toro, you just may end keeping it for yourself. I’m not admitting that I did; I’m just saying that it could happen.
