There is no need to analyze such books beyond the experience and the emotion that their many pages of beauty evoke. Whether or not one can afford the art or work is irrelevant. The interiors are stone cold amazing, and in many cases very uniquely designed, and unquestionably insipartional. Obviously, this is a double dip for the designer, he makes money on the book and money on the advertising, but in so doing, in fact, he renders a great service because the book is thick, spare no expenses on quality photography, and has more images then most books. If you had to have ten books on interior design, in my opinion, this would be one of them, due to its superior quality and style crossover appeal. Buy it, don' think too much.
For anyone who cares about minimalism, over-the-top decoration, and outstanding photography, this is a great book. I could imagine myself happy in most of these houses. Location, architecture, art and decoration - all indicate that the clients had almost infinite financial resources, and advisors of the highest quality. As a source of inspiration for decoration, the book was useless to me: Every aspect, including architecture, art work, design and materials of interiors, is out of reach by many orders of magnitude. We don't live in a Belgian castle, don't have any ancient sculptures from China, Egypt or Rome, or grand bookcases from the 18th century. We tend to want to cook, eat and sit, entertain guests, watch TV some time, have lighting which works at night, and occasionally tackle the mess of papers/cats/plants. Any such mess would feel like a sacrilege in Vervoordt's interiors.Studying this book gave me great pleasure; I loved most of the interiors, and dreamed how it would feel to own or rent these places. I usually manage to get this type of pleasure from visiting the Metropolitan or the MOMA (and other museums). If esthetic pleasure is what you seek, I recommend this book highly.
This is a great book. It visually explains the beauty of imperfection, textures and the qualities that time imparts. It is not making reference to the cost or origin, just a feeling. The raw beauty. The spare sense of space. The elimination of competitive elements so each one becomes important. There is a mood a feeling that is conveyed that makes us more sensitive to things we see.
Effortless elegance and simplicity. An inspirational, philosophical perspective on interior design. I would highly recommend this compilation to anyone striving for an elevated, yet subtle approach to creating serene, but dynamic spaces.
Beautiful book. Great table topper.
The book and its story of presentations just does NOT shine as it should. VERY disappointing. The cover and its artwork throughout the book takes you away but for the most part, leaves you wanting so much more.f
If you're a fan of Japanese aesthetic, you must keep this book nearby. Vervoordt is a brilliant designer who writes as well as he creates visual compositions.
The photos grab you initially. It has a quiet presence; however, the book is more in praise of Vervoordt that a work on wabi. About halfway through, I found it rather repetitive and drab. The expense the author and his clients go to in creating dwellings to mimic the rural poor of Japan is really rather depressing and selfish. Moving an entire barn from Japan to the Netherlands? The environmental cost alone is staggering. Only the obscenely rich can afford to be that "poor". They are more Marie Antoinette playing at being "simple" than people who embrace the true concept of wabi
